You don’t need much space to do portrait photography at home. You just have to be creative with whatever space you have.
Here we decided to do away with any makeshift backdrops cos we purposefully set out to not make it look like a studio setting.
Small speedlights or huge mono lights?
Advances in speedlight/external camera flash technology has been steadily improving. That being said, even monolights are getting better and smaller.
There are good options at every budget category and its small size and affordability, makes small speedlights a no brainer to be used in our use case.
Lighting diagram
I am making full use of the diffused light coming from the bright sun outside. I first set my exposure to get the outside lights to look as bright as i want it to be, and then everything else like the external speedlights are revolved around that.
SB-800 on camera left is almost at full power. Cant remember the exact output, but i just needed enough to produce a rim light around the subject’s bare shoulders and wrap slightly around the face.
SB-910 on camera right is just powered enough to fill in without overpowering the rim lights.
